Nursing Professional Development Specialist/Full Time Days - 80 Hours Biweekly

Job Summary: The Nursing Professional Development (NPD)Specialist supports the needs of the clinical learner and organization by advocating for professional development programs and curricula. The NPD Specialist influences professional role competence and growth of learners in a variety of settings by providing direction and support through strategic planning to meet the associate's educational needs identified through structural needs assessments, regulatory agency requirements, quality outcomes data and leadership input. The NPD Specialist assumes the seven key roles including a learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, champion for inquiry, advocate for NPD specialty, and partner for practice transitions to support the organization in the provision of quality patient care by helping to ensure the clinical competence of nursing staff and foster the delivery of compassionate, evidence-based nursing practice. Job Description/Essential Responsibilities:
• Onboarding/orientation: Develops, coordinates, manages, facilitates, conducts, and evaluates onboarding and orientation programs for nursing & other healthcare personnel.
• Competency management: Assesses, measures, documents, and supports competency, and addresses deficiencies in staff members and team competence.
• Education: Uses educational design process to plan, implement, and evaluate educational initiatives to address practice gaps for identified target audiences to achieve specific outcomes related to identified deficits or opportunities for improvement in knowledge, skill, and/or practice. Uses knowledge and skills to evaluate how educational initiatives enhance the professional development of nurses and other healthcare personnel. Supports the provision of continuing nursing education and collaborates with other professions to design, manage, implement, coordinate, and evaluate interprofessional continuing education
• Collaborative Partnerships: Teaches, coordinates, serves as liaison, and/or advises nurses and other learners concerning education and learning. NPD Specialist enters into collaborative partnerships both within and external to the organization.
• Inquiry: utilizes professional curiosity by participating in research, evidence-based practice (EBP), and quality improvement (QI) initiatives to find ways to improve and transform healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
• Role development: identifies and applies strategies to facilitate continuous growth through ongoing professional learning utilizing the novice to expert (Benner) model.
The NPD Specialist is responsible for utilizing the Scope and Standards of NPD Practice and Professional Performance to provide the framework that delineates the expected level of professional performance as an NPD Specialist; describes the duties that all NPD Specialists are expected to perform competently as the minimum guidelines for practice. Nursing Professional Development Scope and Standards of Practice:
• Standard 1. Assessment – collects pertinent data and information relative to individual, unit, organization and system performance.
• Standard 2. Diagnosis – analyzes assessment data to determine actual or potential practice gaps and their etiology and other problems, issues, or needs.
• Standard 3. Outcome Identification – identifies desired outcomes for a plan tailored to an individual, unit, department, organization, system, or population.
• Standard 4. Planning – establishes a collaborative plan incorporating strategies to achieve expected outcomes.
• Standard 5. Implementation – coordinates implementing the plan and associated processes utilizing strategies to teach and promote wellness.
• Standard 6. Evaluation – evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes. Education/Experience:
•
BSN required; MSN preferred, otherwise required to obtain MSN within three years of hire
•
Previous Nursing Professional Development experience preferred, otherwise 3-5 years of nursing experience, preferably in an acute care hospital or other healthcare setting.
•
Current licensure by the Indiana State Board of Nursing
•
Certification in Nursing Professional Development preferred, otherwise required to obtain in 2 years
•
Obtains or maintains instructor status for programs taught, which may include: ACLS, BLS, PALS; NRP; and CPI
